Whoever invented Valentine’s Day must have known that we needed something colorful to get us through this final push of Winter! Red and pink here we come! When brainstorming cookie recipes for this season, I wanted to keep it silly simple. This easy sugar cookie recipe is perfect to make with your littles and they will LOVE the sprinkles… Or at least Michael did!

These sprinkle sugar cookies have the best vanilla flavoring which is even better with the added touch of sprinkles. It takes no time to make these cookies from scratch and you will be so glad you did!

I also fell head over heels for cookie stamps while making this recipe! Who knew there were so many cute ones, but this “Baked With Love” stamp was my absolute favorite! It is sold out right now, but this Valentine set is too cute!

Sprinkle Sugar Cookies Ingredients

  • Butter – Unsalted butter that is softened is best for this sugar cookie recipe. Let butter sit out at least 1 hour before using or place under a bowl or cup to speed up the process!
  • Sugar – Nothing fancy here, just our tried and true granulated white sugar!
  • Egg – The perfect dough binder! Tip – You can quickly bring the egg to room temperature by placing in a glass of lukewarm water for about 5 to 10 minutes!
  • Vanilla extract – A little goes a long way to give these cookies the perfect flavor!
  • Flour – Unbleached, all-purpose flour is the way to go with this cookie recipe. I prefer King Arthur or White Lilly, but any you have on hand will do.
  • Baking powder – While we don’t want these cookies too fluffy, we do want them to be a nice texture!
  • Salt – When I first started baking, I found it so strange that sweet recipes would call for salt. At just the right amount it actually enhances the cookies sweet flavor!
  • Sprinkles – You can’t have Sprinkle Sugar Cookies without the sprinkles! I’ll share some of my favorite types in just a bit!

How to Make Sprinkle Sugar Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla, mixing until smooth.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  5. Add the flour mixture one cup at a time mixing fully after each addition.
  6. Add your sprinkles and mix for just a few seconds so that they get distributed into the dough.
  7. Press the dough into one or two balls.
  8. Place one ball of dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll out to a 1/4-1/2 inch thickness with a floured rolling pin.
  9. Using a round cookie cutter (or a glass) cut out circle shaped cookies and place them onto the baking sheet.
  10. Once on the baking sheet, take your cookie stamp and press into your cookies. Be gentle, but firm as you press into the dough.
  11. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Only bake 8 for a softer cookie, 10 for a crunchier. Let cool and enjoy!

Sprinkle Sugar Cookies for Every Occasion

For these cookies I used pink, white and red sprinkles for Valentine’s Day, but what’s great about this cookie recipe is that you can change the sprinkles out for any occasion. I have a wide variety of sprinkles stock piled in my baking cabinet for just this reason!

There are so many different varieties that you could use in this recipe. Some of my favorites include the following:

  • Mother’s Day – Use sprinkles that are your mom’s favorite colors or shaped like flowers!
  • Easter – Bright pastels like yellow, green, and purple would be too cute for Easter.
  • Fourth of July – Red, white and blue of course. Star shapes would be amazing!
  • Christmas – Red and green and maybe Christmas tree shaped.
  • Birthdays – Simply match the sprinkle colors to your party theme.

See what I mean – Your possibilities are endless with this cookie recipe!

How Long Do Sprinkle Sugar Cookies Keep?

Once the cookies have cooled completely, store them in an air tight container at room temperature. They should keep fresh for up to two weeks. In my experience they are at their best the first week and then begin to get dryer as the second week approaches.

Can You Freeze Sprinkle Sugar Cookies?

The answer is yes! You can freeze these cookies for up to 3 months. When you are ready to eat them simply spread them out into a single layer and let them come to room temperature. To freshen them up further, you can place them in the oven at 275 degrees for 5 to 10 minutes.
